La historia de la testa di moro tiene su origen en una particular relación amorosa entre dos jóvenes de la época de la dominación árabe de Sicilia, durante el siglo XI. La leyenda habla de una bella muchacha que vivía en el barrio árabe de la ciudad de Palermo. Mientras cuidaba las plantas de su balcón, un mercader de origen moro se enamoró de ella. La joven correspondió a su amor, para poco después descubrir que el hombre estaba a punto de abandonarla para regresar a su tierra natal, donde tenía mujer e hijos. Movida por los celos, la joven encontró la manera de retener al hombre con ella para siempre: le cortó la cabeza y la utilizó como jarrón para cultivar sus plantas. Cuando los vecinos se dieron cuenta de lo florecientes que estaban sus plantas, comenzaron a crear este tipo de macetas y, desde entonces, es típico encontrarlas decorando los balcones de los palacios sicilianos.

Arte e historia se unen en estas piezas que a día de hoy siguen asombrando a muchos artistas y diseñadores, que optan por reinterpretar esta icónica figura con nuevas formas, colores y motivos.

The story of the testa di moro has its origin in a particular love relationship between two young people from the time of Arab domination of Sicily, during the 11th century. The legend speaks of a beautiful girl who lived in the Arab neighborhood of the city of Palermo. While taking care of the plants on her balcony, a merchant of Moorish origin fell in love with her. The young woman reciprocated her love, only to discover shortly after that the man was about to abandon her to return to her homeland, where he had a wife and children. Moved by her jealousy, the young woman found a way to keep the man with her forever: she cut off his head and used it as a vase to grow her plants. When the neighbors realized how flourishing their plants were, they began to create this type of pots and, since then, it is typical to find them decorating the balconies of Sicilian palaces.
