Elaine Miriam was about to begin a PhD at Harvard Medical School when a doctor?s wrong turn-of-hand during a routine medical procedure caused a stroke. At age 27, her scientific trajectory, amongst other life ambitions, came screeching to a halt. To this day, she has neither awareness nor sensation on the right half of her body, endures medullary vestibular symptoms, along with piercing pain. In Inheritance, Miriam uncovers an alternate mode of being, cultivating a poetics out of loss, memory and disability. In her quest for self-reclamation, she harnesses the raw ingredients of sorrow and her iron will to survive to reconfigure personhood in the aftermath of unexpected dispossession.
