Flicker is written in a straightforward, unhurried style rich with imagery, unexpected word choice, and brilliant, original simile. In Asteroid, Mr. Eranger speaks of lingerie left by a lover: clinging to the chair like phantom skin. In The Weight of Words, he depicts a childhood home in which: dysfunction crept in like mold beneath the wallpaper. Threads of pain and loneliness run throughout as he struggles to overcome feelings of unworthiness, loss, and confusion while seeking his place in the world. Harsh realities are buffered by a bittersweet longing for the few good times he recalls: family vacations, first love. Flicker combines the searching of The Odyssey with the disillusionment of The Wasteland. Mr. Eranger shoots from the hip, without employing euphemism to soften the blow. These are powerful poems I will return to again and again for their striking images and powerful impact.

Flicker cuts to the essence of harm and despair, articulates in ways unimaginable and potent. Scott Eranger explores his struggles without extreme, familiar language. He finds gravitas in imagery, surprising and viable. Comparison and metaphor that bends our perception, draws us into his realm with intuitive diction and grace. In Prophet of Exhaustion he ushers us down clandestine halls of peep shows, transforming the tawdry into the mystical and surreal. Doors closed like eyelids in prayer. In a single line he evokes the sacred, the sequestered, the reflex that comes with ecstasy. ...we descended through a flicker of blue light /and green hallucination. Now he describes the trippy experience of watching adult film in a wooden booth painted black. One of Eranger?s numerous skills is the way he turns what might have been mundane detail into resonant observation, blending depth with nuance. In Flicker, Eranger gives voice to the excruciating, the disconsolate. His restrained, nearly detached delivery, hits like a haymaker.
-Christopher Stephen Soden author of Gusher and Tempting God.
The philosopher Jacques Maritain once wrote that poetry is that intercommunication between the inner being of things and the inner being of the human self which is a kind of divination. Scott Eranger writes Decades slipped past, / like snow melting under streetlamps, and it is the great success of these poems that they divine that melting past into a visceral vision that carries him, and us, into a carefully hoped for future. As he writes at the end: in the quiet dark, I trace the tangle you hide / from the world / learn the curves you do not pull away from / our bodies teaching, / without apology. He journey these poems enact is a journey that is the essence of fine poetry.
