At the time and in retrospect, it's one of the best-reviewed Jam albums (along with "All Mod Cons" and "Sound Affects").

NME listed it as #4 on its 1979 album list; reviews emphasize the songwriting and ambitious production.

AllMusic calls it "almost brilliant," but notes that the "Heat Wave" cover closer can seem out of place.

"Setting Sons" combines Weller's view of British class reality circa 1979 with a band on the verge of greatness: anthemic hooks, biting observations, and compositional courage.

It concludes the Jam's early punk/mod phase and leads directly into the mature sonic aesthetic of "Sound Affects."
