Mike Oldfield ‎– Five Miles Out (promo.not for sale)

Released in March 1982, Five Miles Out is the seventh studio album by British multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield. Following the huge success of his debut album, Tubular Bells (1973), Oldfield was undergoing a period of reorientation in the late 1970s.

With Platinum (1979) and QE2 (1980), he had already begun to move more toward pop and rock, without completely abandoning his long, complex instrumental works.

Five Miles Out showcases Oldfield's dual nature:

on the one hand, the tradition of long, progressive instrumental works

on the other, shorter, pop-infused songs with vocals

The title track is based on a dramatic airplane experience Oldfield had: During a flight from Barcelona to San Sebastián, his light aircraft was caught in a severe thunderstorm. He incorporated this experience musically and lyrically into "Five Miles Out."

Five Miles Out is considered a pivotal album because it bridges Oldfield's progressive roots and the poppier, radio-friendly style he increasingly pursued in the 1980s (Moonlight Shadow on Crises, 1983).

Taurus II is often considered by fans to be one of Oldfield's strongest epic compositions.

The dramatic genesis of the title track also gave the album a personal touch.
