En el verano de 1987, ABC publicó When Smokey sings, tributo a Smokey Robinson, uno de sus mayores éxitos que logró el número 5 en Estados Unidos y el número 11 en Reino Unido. Alphabet City se publicó en otoño, alcanzando el puesto 7 en Reino Unido y el 48 en Estados Unidos. También se extrajeron los singles The night you murdered love y King without a crown.

Parte de la crítica musical alabó Alphabet city catalogándolo como el retorno a las formas originales del grupo, resaltando la producción de Fry y White en conjunción con Bernard Edwards, más conocido por su trabajo con Chic. Para las caras B de los dos primeros singles del álbum, ABC ofreció dos viñetas rítmicas inspiradas por su estancia en Estados Unidos. Una se llamó Minneapolis, que fue un llamativo homenaje al sonido de Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Alphabet City is an album by the band ABC released in 1987.

Following a hiatus while singer Martin Fry was treated for Hodgkin's disease, ABC returned to the studio to record Alphabet City, which they thought might be their final album. Best known for "When Smokey Sings", a tribute to Smokey Robinson, the album also spawned "The Night You Murdered Love" and "King Without a Crown" as singles. Many critics lauded Alphabet City as a return to form for the group, noting its polished production by Fry and White in conjunction with Bernard Edwards, best known for his work with Chic. The album's title and the names of several songs were inspired by the Alphabet City section of Manhattan, New York, where Fry and White lived for a time prior to the album's release.
