Hijo de Venus, la diosa de la fertilidad, la belleza y el amor, Cupido es un dios romano cuyo padre varía según el relato, pero hay tres posibles nombres: Marte, Júpiter y Vulcano. De acuerdo a Lucio Anneo Séneca, Vulcano es su padre y por eso Cupido puede provocar amor y pasión estridente. Por otro lado, Marco Tulio Cicerón asegura que Júpite era el papá del dios del amor y la pasión. La tercera versión a cargo de Simónides de Ceos cree que Marte le otorgó el don de la exageración y por ello es tan intenso.

En cualquiera de los casos, su título sigue intacto, pues es el dios del deseo romántico y se encarga de provocar amor en una persona, pero también es capaz de provocar el olvido. Por ello, a Cupido se le conoce como un hacedor y destructor de romances.

Se cree que Cupido nació en la isla de Chipre el mismo día que su madre y por ese motivo estaba “maldito”, pues era señal de que el mundo sufriría con un dios que compartía onomástico con otro, en este caso con una diosa. Ante tal situación, Venus lo llevó al bosque confiando en que las fieras lo cuidaran y fue así que se volvió un dios espontáneo y hasta salvaje. Así, Cupido creó con madera su primer arco y flechas para recibir como obsequio de su madre uno hecho de oro y flechas hechas con diferentes materiales que clasificó en dos: las que concedían el amor con punta de oro y las del olvido con punta de plomo, ambas muy poderosas.

Se cree que Venus cuidaba de Cupido con recelo, pues era un pequeño dios, esto hizo que el niño se escapara con frecuencia, lo que con el paso del tiempo, causó en su madre una duda genuina y preocupante, ¿por qué el niño no crecía? Así que acudió al oráculo de Temis por soluciones y sólo recibió una frase: “el amor no puede crecer sin pasión”. Así, sin entender mucho, nació su hijo Anteros, dios de la pasión y cada vez que Cupido estaba con él crecía hasta convertirse en un joven hermoso, pero no tan ocurrente como era siendo pequeño.

Se dice que Apolo se burlaba de sus dotes como arquero y para demostrarle lo contrario, pues era un niño competitivo, le lanzó una flecha de amor y éste se enamoró de Dafne quien recibió una de olvido. De este modo, nadie volvió a burlarse de Cupido.

No obstante, cada que podría, Cupido pasaba tiempo con Anteros para crecer pues quería enamorarse, pero también dejar de ser un pequeño en pañales y ambas cosas ocurrieron. Una tarde Venus supo de la existencia de Psique, una mortal considerada la joven más hermosa del mundo, a tal grado que los dioses estaban enamorándose de ella y le pidió a Cupido que le lanzara flechas de amor, pues quería que se enamorara del peor hombre sobre la Tierra. Sin embargo, Cupido cayó rendido a sus pies al verla y se le presentó como un joven atractivo y amoroso, pero no podía verle el rostro o no podían estar juntos.

Psique se sentía muy feliz con él a pesar de no ver su cara y le dio la confianza que Cupido esperaba, y él comprendió que sin confianza el amor muere. Una noche, manipulada por sus hermanas, Psique vio el rostro de Cupido y éste, quien la había llevado a un castillo, la expulsó. No obstante el amor de ambos era tan grande que ella pidió a Venus que los dejara estar juntos. Ésta le puso obstáculos y pruebas que superó hasta encontrar a su amado. Desde entonces, la unión Cupido - Psique es sinónimo de Amor y Alma. De este romance nació Voluptas, diosa del placer.

Son of Venus, the goddess of fertility, beauty and love, Cupid is a Roman god whose father varies according to the story, but there are three possible names: Mars, Jupiter and Vulcan. According to Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Vulcan is his father and that is why Cupid can provoke love and strident passion. On the other hand, Marcus Tullius Cicero assures that Jupiter was the father of the god of love and passion. The third version by Simonides of Ceos believes that Mars gave him the gift of exaggeration and that is why he is so intense.

In any case, his title remains intact, since he is the god of romantic desire and is responsible for provoking love in a person, but he is also capable of causing oblivion. For this reason, Cupid is known as a maker and destroyer of romances.

It is believed that Cupid was born on the island of Cyprus on the same day as his mother and for this reason he was “cursed”, as it was a sign that the world would suffer with a god who shared his name day with another, in this case with a goddess. Faced with this situation, Venus took him to the forest trusting that the beasts would take care of him and that is how he became a spontaneous and even wild god. Thus, Cupid created his first bow and arrows out of wood to receive as a gift from his mother one made of gold and arrows made of different materials that he classified into two: those that granted love with a gold tip and those of oblivion with a lead tip, both very powerful.

It is believed that Venus looked after Cupid with suspicion, as he was a small god, this caused the child to run away frequently, which over time, caused his mother to have a genuine and worrying doubt: why was the child not growing up? So he went to the oracle of Themis for solutions and only received one phrase: “love cannot grow without passion.” Thus, without understanding much, his son Anteros, god of passion, was born and every time Cupid was with him he grew up to become a beautiful young man, but not as witty as he was when he was little.

It is said that Apollo made fun of his skills as an archer and to prove him wrong, since he was a competitive child, he shot him an arrow of love and he fell in love with Daphne who received an arrow of oblivion. In this way, no one ever made fun of Cupid again.

However, whenever he could, Cupid spent time with Anteros to grow because he wanted to fall in love, but also to stop being a little boy in diapers and both things happened. One afternoon Venus learned of the existence of Psyche, a mortal considered the most beautiful young woman in the world, to such an extent that the gods were falling in love with her and she asked Cupid to shoot her arrows of love, because she wanted her to fall in love with the worst man on Earth. However, Cupid fell at her feet when he saw her and presented himself to her as an attractive and loving young man, but she could not see his face or they could not be together.

Psyche felt very happy with him despite not seeing his face and gave him the trust that Cupid expected, and he understood that without trust love dies. One night, manipulated by her sisters, Psyche saw Cupid's face and he, who had taken her to a castle, expelled her. However, the love between them was so great that she asked Venus to let them be together. She put obstacles and tests on her that she overcame until she found her beloved. Since then, the union Cupid - Psyche is synonymous with Love and Soul. From this romance Voluptas was born, goddess of pleasure.
