Sekhmet diosa de la guerra con cabeza de león, es una de las deidades egipcias más antiguas conocidas. Ella protegió a los grandes faraones y los guió en la guerra. Del aliento de la diosa nació el desierto. Su nombre deriva de la palabra egipcia para poder, y era conocida por ser feroz y sanguinaria.

Representada con cuerpo de mujer y cabeza de leona, aunque con melena, coronada con el disco solar, el uraeus (diosa serpiente Uadjet) que la relacionaba con la realeza, portando el Ankh, y una flor de papiro o loto. Su vestimenta solía ser de color rojo, representando la sangre, aparece mostrando los pechos, símbolo de poder.

La diosa dominante de la duodécima dinastía era también una deidad solar, la hija del dios sol Ra. A menudo, se la representa vestida de rojo, para expresar su sed de sangre, y lleva un disco solar en la cabeza rodeado por una cobra Ureaus, que representa la historia de su creación.

Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess of war, is one of the oldest known Egyptian deities. She protected the great pharaohs and guided them in war. From the goddess's breath, the desert was born. Her name derives from the Egyptian word for power, and she was known for being fierce and bloodthirsty.
