"This handcrafted pewter and glass water barometer is a reverent reproduction of an ancient measuring instrument, bringing classic scholarship to your home.

In the latter part of the 17th and into the 18th centuries the use of the water barometer as a means of forecasting weather conditions spread throughout Europe. Its success was due to the simplicity of the physical principles upon which it is based, as well as the skill of the glassblowers of that age.

The present-day mercury barometer, invented by the Galileo-inspired Italian Torricelli in the 17th Century, works on basically the same principle as the water barometer, that a column's height, be that of water or Mercury, fluctuates with changing atmospheric pressure.

The sole difference between these two instruments is that the atmospheric pressure measured by the water barometer can be influenced by environmental temperature ranges. However, in most normal conditions, even though it is such a simple concept, the water barometer is able to accurately measure atmospheric pressure.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

NB Please do not hold the barometer by the glass.

• Pour some water into the glass bulb while tilting the barometer
• Fill the bulb until the surface of the water comes to the first marker - just underneath the bulb
• Wait until the temperature of the water is the same as room temperature (this will take about 8 hours).
• Add or pour out water from the small tube so that the surface of the water corresponds to the reading of weather conditions as that moment (when carrying out this operation, be careful not to touch the higher bulb with your hands as the heat will cause the air inside the bulb to expand).
• Due to natural evaporation, a teaspoon of water will have to be added every now and then, so that the weather conditions at that moment will correspond to the appropriate reading.

The stake which is fastened on the chain has the same function as the manual pointers of the needle barometer.
